History
| History Pre Zombies | Bert grew up on a rough council estate in South East London. He lived in a two bed flat with his parents and 2 older brothers. Conditions at home were dire, the flat was poorly maintained with mold in every room and walls as thin as paper so you could hear everyone else's business through them. The corridors smelt of urine and weed and the block of flats itself was used by drug dealers and prostitutes. Bert was the quiet one, he kept to himself as best as he could. Being the youngest, he slept on the floor of the small second bedroom in a sleeping bag while his older brothers shared a bunk bed. The boys would lay in the dark at night and listen to their father come home from the pub and start beating their mother. If any of them tried to stop him they'd end up with a belt buckle across the face. Bert vowed to himself that we would leave home as soon as he was able to get away from his father. At 16, Bert left school with minimal qualifications. He packed up what little belongings he had and left without telling his family where he was going. He had no interest in staying in touch. He managed to get a job in a factory doing yard duties. The pay wasn't much but it was enough to get him a bedsit and pay for a small amount of food. He worked hard and became a machine operator. However, a year or so later, the company went bust and this left him without a job or money. He saw an advert in the local paper about bus drivers needed at the local bus garage, fully paid training. Willis jumped at the chance and was soon earning good money driving buses in South East London. About a year into driving buses, he started seeing a woman. One of his regulars who would get on every weekday at the same time and stop. They got chatting and soon started seeing each other. She had an excellent job in central London and Albert loved his driving job. After about 3 years together they got engaged and bought an apartment together. In 2004, they got married. It was only a small ceremony with only her side of the family attending. Roughly a year later, Elizabeth fell pregnant with their first child. Both were over the moon with the news. However, in July 2005 Berts' life was ripped apart. There was a terrorist attack on the London transport network. Elizabeth was traveling up to work when a terrorist detonated an IED on the train. Her body was never found but it was confirmed she was on the train by CCTV moments before the explosion. The loss of Elizabeth and their unborn child was devastating to Bert, he hit rock bottom turning to drink and cigarettes as forms of comfort. He lost his job as he just couldn't leave the apartment. It took at least a year to pull himself together enough to go out to work again. He got himself a job as a coach driver but never gave just the drink. He was known for having a drink or two before starting his shift but if anyone ever challenged him he'd just simply knock them out. However, he was good at his job and seemed to be a firm favourite with the company's clients so they let his drinking slide. |

| History Post Zombies | At the beginning of 2010, news of a pandemic started to hit the headlines. Bert put it down to government nonsense and didn’t take much notice as he continued to work. As the year progressed work started to dry up as people weren’t travelling due to fear of what was now called the ‘Rage Flu’ or ‘Lazarus Pathogen’. His company eventually let him go as they went out of business as they couldn’t sustain the company with no coach work coming in. When the government told everyone to stay at home, Bert hit a new low. No contact with anyone, plus constant alcohol abuse and chain smoking. He hoped that this new flu would get him so he could join his family in whatever was after this life. He became reckless and started venturing out to feed his habit. He saw alot of weird things when he went out, dead bodies littered the streets and was chased numerous times by deranged almost inhuman beings which seemed to want to eat the flesh off of his bones. As alcohol and cigarettes slowly became harder to find or source as deliveries and manufacturing ceased. Slowly, Bert fell into the despair of cold turkey, he was bed ridden for months as the world around him continued to fall apart. Those months were a mere blur for him. He couldn’t remember anything about what happened to him other than he felt fresh and reborn again. He ventured out into a now deserted south east London. He was shocked at what he saw, the destruction and devastation that had occurred. He noticed that shops and homes had been looted. There was literally nothing left. Bert made the decision to leave the city and head north. He had no reason to head north other than it was away from London. He had a lock up which had his wifes possessions in and a few of his own things, including his prized motorbike. He knew fuel would be hard to come by but it would be the easiest and quickest way out of London. He packed a bag with some of the old camping stuff he had. It wasn’t in the best of condition but it was better than nothing. Winter was in full swing so he packed warm clothing including some of his wifes jumpers. He placed her prized necklace around his neck before he set off for the unknown. During his travels north he came across various groups willing to help him and he helped them. He learned various new skills on his journey, but the groups never seemed to last. Either poor judgement calls lead to people getting killed or they were just bent on hurting people which Bert found wasn’t necessary. Everyone was struggling to survive, why make things worse. Albert found himself surviving another winter on his own as he walked into North York National Park, hoping to find somewhere safe to hold up for the winter and maybe find some food. |
