History
| History Pre Zombies | René Rouen was born to Pierre and Gabrielle Rouen in the city of Paris, France. His father, Pierre, was a Grandmaster Fencing competitor and owner/operator of Paris' oldest and most prestigious fencing academy. Gabrielle was a highly renowned professor of European history at the Sorbonne University, who in her teens, had earned three Olympic Gold Medals in gymnastics. René learned fencing and gymnastics from his parents starting at an early age. His mother made sure he had a keen intellect as well. He earned many academic and athletic accolades during secondary school, including honor roll, athletic achievements in fencing, gymnastics and football (soccer). René was very close to his family both in Paris and with those in and around the ancestral estate in Rouen, France. He loved taking holiday to the family vineyard and winery, despite the long hours of chores that often accompanied those visits. René was especially protective of his younger sister, Chloé. He didn't allow other girls to bully her and wasn't shy about telling boys to show her anything less than the utmost respect, lest they wanted to incur an overly protective brother's wrath. René spent much of his youth at his father's fencing academy. Since the academy produced its own foils, epees, rapier and other blades, René became quite the skilled swordsmith as well. He also learned a great deal about tanning and leatherworking. One of René's biggest accomplishments was earning the national title of best swordsman in the under 18 competition. He was humble in his acceptance, but inside he felt an immense pride. |

| History Post Zombies | René was in England, just prior to the widespread viral outbreak, to compete in a fencing tournament. He found himself trapped on the England side of the Channel with no means of returning home. Attempts to return home were met with one failure after another. René did what he needed to to survive in a situation far from home. He has spent the last two years avoiding large groups of people and not staying in one place too long. He has had the benefit of learning survival and field craft skills from the occasional mentor who took him under their wing. He has also made a somewhat meager living as a messenger between communities and sometimes teaching fencing to folks during his travels throughout England, Wales and the occasional trip to the Scottish Highlands. René is a relatively recent arrival to Thistledrift, having arrived to deliver a message to the town council, just before the winter snow turned heavy. He has been earning his keep by teaching fencing to the townsfolk and giving information regarding places he has been during his travels. |
