History

History Pre Zombies Dmitri was born in the waning days of the Soviet Union. His family lived outside the city of Drohobych, Ukraine, nestled in the Ukrainian section of the Carpathian Mountains. His father, Oleksander Eduardvych, made his living as a production foreman at the nearby oil refinery. His mother, Rehina, worked as domestic staff for several Party officials. This was primarily due to her Romani heritage, which didn’t allow her to do much else. The family consisted of brothers Sasha, Bhodan, Mykhail and Dmitri as well as sisters Nataliya and Anhelina. While other families in the area depended solely on the Soviet government to survive, Oleksander taught his children how to live off the land. Boys and girls alike worked in the garden and orchard, cared for the few livestock animals they could support, and everyone pitched in on chores.

Tragedy struck the family in 1991 when, during the collapse of the Soviet system, Dmitri’s older sister was accidentally killed. She had just finished a shift as a nurse at the local hospital when pro-Soviet police and pro-Ukrainian protesters clashed. Anhelina was caught in the crossfire, attempting to render aid to casualties. The family would feel her loss for years to come, with Independence Day being both a celebration and a mourning.

Dmitri’s childhood was spent in the mountains and forests near his home. His brothers taught him how to hunt and fish, while his sister Nataliya, an avid naturalist, taught him about plants and trees and how to know his environment.

Dmitri would later enlist in the Ground Forces of Ukraine, volunteering for duty as a Paratrooper. He was selected for Airborne training, graduating in the middle of his class of candidates. He was posted to the 80th Airmobile Regiment in Lviv and assigned to the Reconnaissance Company. According to his leaders, Dmitri was a natural Scout. His childhood lessons and the technical acumen that the army taught him made him formidable as a Scout.
History Post Zombies Dmitri had always wanted to see the world outside of Ukraine. Following tours of duty in Iraq and Kosovo, Dmitri took an extended period of leave and traveled through Europe. He backpacked through Poland, the Czech Republic, and Germany’s Black Forest region before hopping a flight to the United Kingdom. Dmitri briefly visited London but then headed north to York. An old army buddy, Alexsiy, had emigrated to York, and the two had planned a reunion. Alexsiy, Dmitri, Ivana (Alexiy’s finance), and Yelena (Alexisy’s sister) were camping in the Yorkshire Dales when the first cases of “Rage Flu” hit England. The group discussed packing up and heading back to Alexiy’s flat in York, but the UK government implemented travel bans and curfews before the group could leave the area. Like many residents of the region, they were ordered to shelter in place.

Instead of being allowed to travel back to York proper, Dmitri and his friends were sheltered at a temporary Red Cross housing site in Scarborough. Over the next few days, they watched the world devolve into mass panic and chaos. Dmitri put his training to good use, volunteering at an Aid Station and, in a wild stroke of luck, serving as a translator for a Russian tour group housed in an adjacent camp. It was also at this time that Dmitri and Yelena developed feelings for one another. The pair spent much of their free time together, making the best of a hellish situation. They spent Christmas together in Scarborough, not knowing what was looming on the horizon.

Before long, the rumors they’d heard about infected hordes overrunning towns and eating the living were no longer rumors. A group of the infected appeared on the outskirts of Scarborough in October. That was all that Dmitri, Alexisy, Yelena and Ivana needed; they packed their few belongings and abandoned the area. They traveled south, following the coast. As the weather began to turn toward winter, they started using abandoned buildings for shelter. One night, this practice changed the group forever.

Alexsiy and Dmitri had taken up the practice of taking turns to scout ahead, with the other remaining with Yelena and Ivana. It was Alexsiy’s turn on scout duties, which meant it was up to him to find a safe building for the night. Alexsiy selected a somewhat fortified house and moved in. His initial sweep of the house didn’t turn up anything, so he signaled the others, hiding nearby in a thicket, to move in. The group occupied the house, moving furniture and debris around to limit access, and settled for a cold meal from their meager rations. They each took turns on watch that night. Dmitri was jarred awake by a scream of terror from Yelena. Alexsiy had been on watch and was fighting off one of the infected, Ivana’s bloody body lying nearby. Before Dmitri could react, another infected attacked Alexsiy; Yelena and Dmitri grabbed one of the group’s packs and dashed out of the house into the cold dawn.

For hours, the pair pushed further south down the English coast. They came across a deserted Army Aid Station, which they briefly checked for supplies and then moved on. Eventually, they reached a small village, which the inhabitants had fortified, and were allowed to stay the night. That night, in the shadow of a barrel fire, the lovers discussed what had happened that morning. Dmitri blamed himself for what happened to Alexsiy, but Yelena reassured him that it wasn’t his fault.

The following day, a convoy of military survivors rolled into the village. The convoy's leader, a middle-aged Warrant Officer, informed anyone who would listen that a large camp had been set up in Hull. The only catch was that there was a limited number of seats. Dmitri and Yelena agreed to head to Hull, but only one seat remained. Dmitri put Yelena on the truck, promising to be in the next convoy that would come through later in the week. Dmitri’s last view of Yelena was as the convoy bounced out of the village, Yelena’s red hair blowing in the wind.

A week went by, but there was no convoy. So Dmitri bartered for some supplies and headed out in search of the convoy. He found one of the vehicles about a day’s hike from the village. It showed signs of having been attacked, and an infected soldier had been trapped in the cab of the truck. Dmitri had no idea if the remainder of the convoy had made it to Hull. He continued on toward Hull, exhausting his supplies and eventually being stalked by several infected for several days.

Eventually, Dmitri stumbled across Thistledrift and was granted access. He’s pulled his weight so far, but he also hasn’t forgotten about Yelena and his promise to find her in Hull.
