Lola looked at the man worried as she looked at the bruise on his face from where she had accidentally hurt him. She was refusing to talk about it, but she did feel bad as she led the way through the village to the place she kept track of communication.
René paused just outside the threshold of the door to the old radio station. 'What if this wasn't his family,'he thought. 'Have I been getting my hopes up the last few days just to have them crushed yet again.' He had stopped so abruptly before entering that Lola hadn't even noticed until she was halfway down the hallway to the radio room.
Lola turned suddenly, not feeling the man's presence not to her. She turned and looked at him and slowly approached him. "Come on. You have to know one way or another." She reminded him as she looped her arm through his and tugged him further down the corridor.
René allowed himself to be pulled along until they got to a door with a hand written sign that read radio room. He looked at Lola. "I think it might be best if you just talk to Chloè. No sense in getting her upset if she's not my sister. Let me just listen. I should be able to tell if it's my sister."
The woman nodded. She could do that but as she started the generator and checked the solar panel connections she looked at the man and shook her head. “I will be you just need to give me the signal and that can change. But just remember the rules - you cannot give our location.” She said quietly.
"Oui, I understand." René took a deep breath as he closed his eyes. He made a silent prayer that this was his family. Despite the fear and anxiety that it might not be, he had to know. "Try and ask her something that only she and I would know about."
“Like what exactly?” She demanded quietly as she sat down and started lighting up the panels and heard the familiar whirl of electricity. She could not wait for the Europa to be back for the power but on the other hand she feared what might happened with a certain sailor who she had rejected.
René gave the question some thought for a moment. "Ask her who her best friend growing up."
Very specific the woman said shaking her head as she dialled into the familiar numbers by now and waited a few moments to listen for anything before she spoke into the void. “This is Myth looking for my Sunday date?” Lola said hopeful that the girl would be there like usual.
Chloé's voice came back immediately. "Hey there. How did your supply run go? Everyone came back safely I hope."
René listened to the voice carefully and and felt his heart beating faster. It sounded like his sister. He wasn't positive though. It had been so long that perhaps it was his wishful thinking. His expression was a mix of hope and anxiety that was clearly evident to Lola.
“They did and we found a couple of people since last week so it’s been an eventful week to say the least.” The woman shivered a little bit and wrapped her hands around the steaming mug of tea she had brought with her to fend off the cold that seeped into every fiber of her being at the moment.
René noticed Lola shivering in the cool environment of the radio room. He took off his fur lined bomber jacket and draped it over Lola's shoulders. He quietly whispered "Better?'
Lola looked surprised at the coat wrapped around her and smiled. “Thank you.” She whispered softly as the microphone was muted.
Chloe often asked about newcomers. This time she didn’t though. "That’s cool."
Lola laughed a little bit and sighed as she led the conversation a little bit down a path that would lead towards asking about friends growing up. It took about twenty minutes but eventually Lola found herself asking about friends. “Did you still have the same friends from being a child until all of this happened?” She wondered quietly glancing to René.
Chloé's voice sounded both happy and sad as she answered. "Kind of. There's this girl, Brigitte. We were friends at one time long aga, but she hasn't really spoken to me since returning from Le Havre."
“I used to have a best friend who would go off and come back all the time. But maybe it’s the trauma of what happened where she was and coming back?” The woman offered daring to glance at René as she waited to find out one way or another.
There was a long moment of silence from Chloé before her voice came over the radio. "My best friend though was my brother, René. He was always there for me growing up. We always supported one another. Even if we didn't always agree with one another. I remember having a crush on this guy from his school. I really wanted to go to this with him. René said it wasn’t a really good idea, but I convinced him to tell the guy I was interested in going to the dance. I should have listened to René." There was another long pause. "I miss him so much. I wish he'd never gone to London for the European fencing tournament before the Hungry Ones came.
René had heard enough to convince him. Tears started to fall down his face as he grasped the microphone. "Tu m'as manqué aussi, Chloé." (I've missed you too, Chloè.)
"Wha...what?!" Chloe must have been gripping the microphone hard. She was frantically shouting for her father and grandfather to come to the radio.
Lola laughed as the microphone was taken from her and she let out a cheer. She spun happily in the chair as everything came together at someone at the very least got a happy ending to their day.
The family spoke with one another for nearly an hour. René was saddened by the news of his mother, but felt joy at knowing the rest of his family was safe and his family was overwhelmed with joy at his being alive and in a safe community. They agreed to speak the following day as Chloe asked to speak with Lola alone for a moment.
René set the microphone down, but before Lola could take it, he pulled her up from her seat and hugged her tightly for a moment. "Merci. You have given me hope I will see my family again." He held her at arms length and it seemed as if he was going to kiss her for a moment. He simply released his hold on her and turned quickly away for the door. In a heartbeat he was gone.
Lola just nodded and smiled at the man. They could talk more later on and discuss everything better. “What’s up Chloe?” She asked once the man left her in the sound booth by herself.
"I want to say thank you. You have made all of us here so happy. I can’t remember seeing papa and grandpere smileso much as they have done so this last hour. I owe you a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid." Chloé's voice was filled with emotion.
Lola shook her head. “You owe me nothing Chloè. I’ll keep him safe until you can reunite.” Lola promised quickly hoping that the man would at least stay now until spring when it was easier to travel and move around the country.
Chloe gave a good hearted chuckle. "It's not René traveling I'm worried about. I saw the look in papa's eyes. We still have the motor boat. I think he's wondering if it would make it across the Channel."
Lola laughed a little. “Not this time of year.” Lola explained quickly. "The North Sea did not care who you were or what you were doing and would happily swallow you up whole. “
Chloé pouted. She was just as anxious to see René as Papa and Grand-pere. "Understood. I’ll let them know." There was a long pause. "Tell René we love him. Give him a hug for us if you will." The stairwell light flickered. "I have to go. Dinner meal is really late. Thank you again. You have no idea how much this means to all of us. Chloé signing off.
Lola smiled to herself. “I will tell him all of that. Stay safe Myth out.” Lola said signing off with a spin on her chair. She was happy with how the day had gone to say the least. Someone how she had achieved the impossible.

Brigadier Felton had sat next to the radio operators as they monitored the transmission. He had heard every word. Finally an officer beckoned the Brigadier over to a large map that showed two positions where radio interpt teams were deployed to the north and south of York. "What do you have Captain Sinclair?"
Captain Sinclair looked at the map and used a yardstick to draw two lines with a grease pencil. "We've been able to use radio direction finders to get seperate bearings and determined the source of the radio transmission is coming from a coastal settlement. A place called Thistledrift."
Brigadier Felton studied the map. It would be near impossible to mount a large scale military operation until the spring, but perhaps a small reconnaissance force could infiltrate the settlement. Even a single person could be sufficient in finding his daughter. This was going to take careful thought. "Captain Sinclair, who is our most proficient communications specialist."
Sinclair gestured down the line of radios. "Sergeant Bell sir. Six years with the Royal Corps of Signals."
A soldier called out. "Sounds like the they're preparing to end communications. The French girl just signed off."
Lola smiled as she started the close down process for the radio station when she heard a crackle on the line and voices. “Hello?” She demanded quickly wondering if Chloè had come back to say something else. “Chloè? Anyone there? I heard you speaking.”
There was a pause before a voice came from the speaker. "Lola Felton, this is your father. I'm letting you know. Come spring, I will be coming to get you and bring you home safely."
Lola made a face and turned around to close the system down obviously hearing an echo on along the radio wave. The woman turned pale and felt a block of ice go poured down her back. “I had no idea who Lola Felton is but she is not here. I hope you find peace with that.” She finally said as she turned the system down not waiting for a response.

René stood outside the radio station. He didn't seem particularly effected by the cold despite not wearing his bomber jacket. He seemed distracted, though a smile crept at the edges of his mouth. He turned to Lola as she stepped outside.
Lola held out the jacket to the man despite how she was shaking and pale. “Thank you for letting me borrow it.” She breathed not looking at him. She had so much on her mind right now but she needed a drink. “I need a drink. Do you need a drink? Let’s get a drink.” She rambled.
René looked the shivering Lola and shook his head. "You need it more than I. Besides my heart is filled with enough warmth at the moment." He took the jacket and slipped her arms into the sleeves. He was already wearing multiple layers of clothing and while not really warm at the moment, he didn't feel the cold at the moment. He gestured for Lola to take the lead.
Lola looked at the man and nodded. She had a bottle of booze back at her… their cottage that would be handy. “I have a bottle that will work.” She decided. “We can… celebrate.” Yeah celebrate tonight and tomorrow she could figure out what the hell she was going to do.
