I’m too tired

Cassandra looked at the people around her and smiled as the tenth happy new year declaration came her way. They all looked worse for wear after the New Year’s Eve celebration. She felt rough, but she had not drunk and had gone to bed early when the Europa crew had joined the celebrations, as she did not feel like she could be false. She also was getting more and more tired by the day thanks to the stress of Smith’s trial.
Juliet wasn't feeling 100% either, though her reasons were far different than her friends. She did have a few drinks the night before, she had not left the party early and she had certainly not gone to sleep when she had crawled into bed with Travis the night before. She walked up to Cassandra and offered a half-enthusiastic, half-exhausted greeting. "Hey Cass. You okay? You're looking about how I feel at the moment."
“I am tired. Did you have a good night?” Cassandra wondered quietly as she shift across the bench to let the woman sit down with her. “Get yourself some coffee will perk yourself up better.” The coffee has tasted weird to her but maybe it was just her taste buds.
Juliet gave a light chuckle as she grabbed a carafe and poured herself a cup. She added four sugars and finally took a sip. "Much better." She gave a shake of her head. "I have no idea what doctor ever determined that the human reaches their sexual prime, but they never met Travis. It's going to be two days before I can walk right."
“Wish I had that problem.” Cassandra spat before she held up her hand in apology. “This has not been a good Christmas and New Year for me. I actually think this might be the worst I have ever had. “ And she felt like that was saying something with the end of the world.
Juliet’s expression shifted to deep concern, and she gave Cassandra a good, hard look. She noticed the stress lines and fatigue. "You and Nathan still at odds about the upcoming trial?"
“At odds would mean we are talking.” The woman snorted and shook her head as she picked up the coffee and took a sip. She frowned at the coffee taste and put the mug down, why did it taste metallic.
Juliet saw Cassandra’s face grimace at the taste of her coffee. The last time she had seen Cassandra make a face like that was when the woman had felt ill. She set her coffee mug down and felt Cassandra’s cheek, checking for a fever. "You sure you're feeling alright? You don't have a fever, but you are looking a little pale. Perhaps we should go to the clinic so I can check you out."
“Oh no. Don’t be silly. Have your breakfast. I am just overworked and not getting enough rest. I need to get justice for the women of our community whether it’s Thistledrift or Europa.” She assured picking up the water this time to get rid of the taste in her mouth.
Juliet received the answer she'd expected. She stood up and gave Cassandra a stern expression. "I can wait on breakfast. We're going to the clinic now so I can give you a full examination and run a few tests."
Cassandra shook her head. “You do not need to.” The woman said brushing it away. “I will be fin…”
Juliet cut Cassandra off mid sentence and waggled a finger. "You can either come to the clinic or I'll have Bartholomew and Samuel over there carry you home while I get a sedative that'll knock you out for the next 24 hours. You look as if you're about to collapse for God's sake."
“They would not dare too.” She hissed glancing to where the two men were sat joking over something before she realised that indeed the pair would when it came to her and if she was honest only one of them could carry her. “Fine. Lead the way then but this is silly.” She sighed softly.
Juliet had expected resistance to her ultimatum. She was actually surprised that it only took a moment for Cassandra to give. This worried the young doctor even more. Something was seriously off with Cassandra. She took the small victory, though. Five minutes later, they were in the clinic with Cassandra sitting for an exam.
Juliet started the exam using a penlight to inspect Cassandra's eyes, ears and throat. "Do you have any of the following symptoms? Sore throat, trouble hearing, blurry vision or headaches?"
The woman slowly sat on the exam bed and tried to relax. What if there was something really wrong with her? How was she going to fix it? “I have a headache, but I am tired.” The woman shrugged a little.
Juliet pulled a stethoscope from a hook on the wall. She pressed the device to Cassie's chest, then back and listened to her heart and lungs. "Have you had nausea, any changes in appetite or your senses of taste or smells.
"All of it, but it's my normal stress reaction," Cassandra replied, not even reacting to the cold stethoscope on her chest. "I am fine, Jules. I am just trying to keep the threads of our community together." She reminded.
Juliet stepped away for a moment, returning shortly with a syringe and a few ampules for a blood draw. She filled the three ampules and set them on the counter after applying a bandage to the extraction site. She then grabbed two small devices that appeared to be thermometers at first glance. "Take these, go into the bathroom and urinate over them. I'll check your blood samples and run a few tests. Okay?"
“Really want me to pee over then.” The woman sighed knowing her friend was not going to take no for an answer. She quickly did what she needed to do returning with the small devices in tow.
Juliet busied herself with running blood test on the samples. She glanced up from looking into a microscope. "Have you noticed any strange changes recently. Anything at all, no matter how small."
“Nothing other than I am exhausted.” Cassandra said with a shrug as she sat back down looking at Juliet. “Those tests look like pregnancy tests… wait is that what I just peed on?” The woman said becoming alert.
Juliet wandered over to the counter and picked up one of the home pregnancy tests. Shock registered on her face as she looked at the results, She quickly snatched up the second test strip and stood speechless as she looked at the results a second time. She stood there in silence. Not sure what to say to Cass.
“Juliet?” Cassandra said sharply as she looked at the woman who looked shocked.
Juliet turned to Cassandra. She looked down at the pregnancy test strips, then back up at her friend. "These are home pregnancy tests. They both came back positive. I'm going to need to run another test on your blood."
“No… I… I have been taking contraceptives.” The woman whispered as she felt for a moment her body go cold to the core, and she felt like the colour had left the room for a moment. “Fuck… Nathan is going to go mental.” She realised. This was the first time in their year-long relationship that she was worried about telling the man something.
Juliet began running a test on the last blood sample with her equipment. She rubbed her hand across her mouth before turning to Cassandra. "The machine is going to run a hormone level. The results will give us an indication as to when conception occurred. It's going to take about an hour." Juliet paused. "It's your decision, but we might want to send a runner to the ship and have Nathan come here."
“No.” Cassandra snapped quickly as she stood up suddenly and barrelled back into the bathroom and threw up violently. She was in there for a while; she came out again with her radio in hand and was talking into it weakly. “What do you mean there is a problem at the radio station?” She demanded of the person on the other end.
"Duncan Smith attacked his Marine escort, took his sidearm. René was coming off tower guard and saw Smith entering the radio station. He found Bart, who has sent archers to cover the exits. Right now there's a standoff at the radio station. Smith is holding two hostages. He's demanding a car, water and rations for two weeks and safe passage out of town. Captain Skye has been informed, and marines are on their way."
Juliet gasped at the news. "Lola and Vicky are at the radio station."
“Come on.” The older woman said with a sigh as she grabbed her coat and her water bottle to swill out her mouth as they went. “I knew this would happened.” She said, shaking her head as she confirmed to the young voice on the radio that she was on her face.
Juliet grabbed her coat as well. She muttered a curse under her breath as she snatched a trauma kit bag from the cubbyhole next to the entrance and followed Cassandra out into the cold morning.
